I think it's safe to say that coming back from the holidays is something not many people want to do - especially students. Well, the weather gods were on their side as we had two snow days. I hope you all kept safe and warm during the snow storms this week. As nice as it was to ease back into the school week, it had put us behind in our work. This week the students began creating outdoor art installations, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. They were allowed to work individually, in pairs or small groups. I really like this project because it is very different then what people normally expect for an art class and it forces the students to think outside the box! The days that the students were here, they really used their time well to create their installations. On Monday, Miss Patterson is visiting the class to see what we have been working on throughout this term. We will be moving onto Printmaking for the week. Tuesday, we will have a brief break back to installations to finish it off. I will upload pictures of the finished products so you can see their wonderful creativity!! - Miss Stewart This week we began our first sculpture unit! I thought this week would be a great week for the students to start something new and exciting before they broke off for the holidays!
We started off by exploring the history of sculpture. I wanted them to gain a better understanding on how sculpture has transformed over the centuries. I think a few of them were surprised on what is considered sculpture in today's art world! It's always fantastic hearing their own opinions on what they like and dislike about certain art pieces! After exploring the works of Michelangelo and Louise Nevelson (just to name a few!), they began on their first sculpture! Using cardboard, they were to create a sculpture with their choice in subject matter. I wanted them to pick something they were passionate about because surprisingly, cardboard can be very difficult to work with! We had a great first day in AVI1O! We had to do a bit of housekeeping at the beginning of class before we got started on exploring Elements and Principles of Design.
First, we filled out, "All About Me" sheets. It's important to me to get to know each and every one of my students. We then looked through the course outline, discussed Blyth policies and procedures and assessments. Each student was given a letter regarding AGO and their art kit as well. We finished the class off by introducing the Elements and Principles of Design. We went through a PPT on each element and principle, and discussed what each meant. Then, we created a class set of exemplars to hang up in the room. Next Monday, we will be making our portfolios and starting to learn basic techniques of drawing. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! - Miss. Stewart |
