This week was out of the norm with the two snow days, but we were able to make some progress through our music unit. The start of the week, we spent analyzing genres of music and how artists connected with their musical style. The students put together a short presentation of an artist of their choice. Then we began examining codes and conventions of music videos. We have explored codes and conventions throughout this term so the students are able to identify aspects of media types quite easily. The main focus of this task is to put those ideas into writing, use the correct terminology and edit their work! Monday we are having a visitor from Sunshine 89 Radio come in for a career talk. We will also finish the Textual Analyis. Hope you all have a safe and warm weekend! Miss Stewart I decided to finish out the last week of class with movies! In the spirit of Christmas, we watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Monday. It was a great movie to watch as it had stereotypical Christmas codes and conventions that everyone could easily identify! Next we looked at the success and failure of movies - how do producers market movies and what determines its success?
Students worked hard on a group/independent project for the remainder of the week. They each picked a movie that was not successful and made changes to it! They used their knowledge and understanding from codes and conventions and adapted it to make it better! The project had the students writing a short summary of the changes they would make, and then creating a new movie poster and movie trailer. I am going to try and post some of the trailers if I can because they were great! I know they were apprehensive at first, but they did a great job. I also gave them their ISU to work on, if they so choose. They are to create their media story, using two media mediums of their choice! When we get back from the holidays, we will be moving into our music unit! I am hoping to have a guest speaker come in to work with the students to produce their own jingle/advertisement for the radio! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your loved ones. Travel safe and enjoy every minute of it! See you in 2015, Miss Stewart After our unit test on Wednesday, we began exploring print media! We started by diving into the ins and outs of advertising. We looked at the codes and conventions, as well as the progression of advertising from the Ancient Times to present day!
We capped our week off by playing a game of Advertising Monopoly! Next we will continue with advertising by deconstructing and reconstructing ads, and will explore careers with a guest speaker from Snap'd! Have a safe and fun weekend! - Miss. Stewart |
